My name is Latisha Yaranon I am a senior majoring in Social Services. I started as a community-based liaison for health-related issues during fall quarter 2006-2007. This year I am the Central to the Community Coordinator for the Center. I oversee 4 liaisons that coordinate service opportunities through various local non-profit organizations in Ellensburg. The goal of the Central to the Community Program is to develop a partnership between the DVDCEC and local service organizations by:
1. Assess the needs of the organizations and how might they be served thru the CWU community.
2. Implement activities to support those organizations needs.
3. Recruit and coordinate participants.
I just returned from Zambia, Africa studying the effects of poverty in Zambia as well as economic/social challenges on a global level. As a result of this experience, I am establishing the strategic groundwork for planning and implementing local and national campaigns on our campus and within the local community. For example, as part of the World AIDS Day campaign throughout the month of November, I will be conducting HIV/AIDS training through the American Red Cross and mobilizing student groups to assist with a Red and White Ball to raise awareness of pressing HIV/AIDS issues.
